Interpretive theme “Guardians of the New World … Through the Eyes of a Soldier”, yes …we transform you into a military recruit for the Regimiento Fijo, the local militia, in preparation for the 1797 British attack led by General Brigadier Ralph Abercrombie.
Your senses are awakened! Prepare yourself for a once in a lifetime sensory experience and view the Fort lit with over 125 Candle lit Lanterns… a privilege had by few as we board an air conditioned bus to understand Spain military ‘Defense in Depth” strategy and view the 3 lines of defense to then arrive at Plaza Norzagaray.
Here we learn the Why of the Military City, hear the legend of the Devils Sentry Box and enjoy a demonstration on the “Etiquette of the Fan” while we await the “Centinela Alerta” call to hear Gov. Ramon de Castro declaration that the British are coming. We then March up the Historic Ramp led by drum and fife into the Castillo to view the troop quarters, enter the exploding tunnels, view the dungeon with its prisoner being guarded by a Spanish soldier, we respect Santa Barbara, the Patron Saint of the artillery men to then push and pull the Canon into place at the “Caballero” the highest point of the Fortification.
We then reassemble at the “Revellin de La Trinidad”, a lookout point for a ”Call to Action” Toast to Protect and Preserve our World Treasures for Generations to Come… as we enjoy Spanish guitar music.
